It attacks leaves and fruit of lemon, orange, and grapefruit. Heavy infestations during times of plant water stress can cause leaf and fruit drop, twig dieback, and even death of large branches. In 1977, the last year for which data are available, estimated loss statewide due to the citrus red mite totaled $15.9 million.
