California Agriculture special issue on the UC Global Food Initiative

California Agriculture is planning a special issue on research topically related to the UC Global Food Initiative (GFI), launched by UC President Janet Napolitano in July 2014. In recognition of the third anniversary of the GFI, the special issue is tentatively scheduled for summer 2017.

The primary content of the special issue will be previously unpublished, significant original research, or reviews of such research, conducted in the following GFI subject areas: nutrition, food security, food sourcing, food equity, food literacy, food recovery, food waste, local food systems, sustainable agricultural production, sustainable fishery practices, sustainable urban agriculture and climate smart agriculture. The research presented need not have been funded by a GFI grant.

Please submit abstracts (up to 250 words) for review by October 1, 2016 to Executive Editor Jim Downing: jdowning@ucanr.edu. The journal's editors, in consultation with the members of the GFI research working group, will review the abstracts and, by October 14, invite a selection of authors to submit full manuscripts. These manuscripts may be either research briefs (up to 1,500 words) or full-length articles (up to 4,000 words). All manuscripts — both research briefs and full-length articles — will be due November 18, 2016 and will be reviewed through the journal's usual double-blind peer-review process, with an initial decision issued typically in 30 to 60 days.

The editors aim to assemble a collection of papers that represents significant findings in a range of GFI subject areas as well as work by a diverse group of authors. Please review the California Agriculture writing guidelines; because the journal targets a broad audience, authors are asked to contextualize the research reported and to elaborate on its implications for policy and practice.

Authors are welcome to submit a brief description of a proposed paper for review for suitability prior to the submission deadline. Contact Executive Editor Jim Downing with any questions.
